Although CBD cafe culture is on the rise, with the appetite for cannabidiol food and drinks growing all the time, you don’t have to leave your home to enjoy the benefits of CBD coffee! You can make cannabidiol coffee from the comfort of your home surprisingly easily! If you’re trying to treat a mental health condition, like anxiety, with CBD, it’s always best to use doses of CBD oil daily in droplets. However, for a relaxing lift at any time of the day, cannabidiol coffee is perfect for some light stress relief. Here, we take a look at how you can make CBD coffee from home in several ways.

How To Make Cannabidiol Coffee – Different Methods

There are several different ways that you can make CBD coffee at home; here are just a few for you to try for yourself!Only Green CBD Coffee With Branded Mug and Coffee Beans

DIY Infusing Coffee With CBD Oil

The DIY method of infusing CBD with coffee is probably the simplest way of getting a relaxing cannabidiol dose with your morning brew. Making cannabidiol coffee this way is a simple way of brewing up coffee at home. Whether you’re using a machine, a french press or boiling up instant coffee, simply stir in a couple of drops of CBD. Simply infuse the same amount you would normally take and “hey presto!”, you have delicious cannabidiol coffee.

Buying Pre-infused Coffee Beans

Our preferred method is to buy pre-infused coffee beans, like our excellent OG CBD coffee, and use them to make your favourite drink. Our beans contain 200mg of CBD in a 200g bag, and whichever product you choose, the bag should always indicate the quantity of CBD. This can help you ensure that you track your consumption of cannabidiol in line with any other doses you are taking. For a more detailed account of the different products, types of beans available and the laws of CBD coffee, read our guide to CBD coffee in the UK.

French Press

With pre-infused coffee beans, there are two main methods of brewing your coffee. After grinding your beans, making your coffee in a cafetiere, or French press, is often the most popular method. Once brewed, simply pour and add sugar and milk to your liking!

Espresso Machine

You can also make delicious cappuccinos, espressos, lattes and americanos with your infused coffee beans using a standard espresso machine! You can pour beans into a machine with an in-built grinder. Alternatively, grind them yourself beforehand, and follow the instructions for your favourite coffee! Need help frothing your milk? Check these great tips out! The Rise of CBD Cafe Culture in The UK

We all know that the size of the CBD market is constantly increasing. This is especially true in the UK, which has the largest CBD consumer market in Europe! The UK CBD market is currently worth more than £400 million. It’s even expected to increase to an astonishing £1bn by 2025! The size of this market is largely down to the online and in-store sale of CBD products like oils, balms, gummies, skincare and tinctures. However, there is a significant and growing number of CBD cafes in the UK. These cafes weave cannabidiol and wellness into everything they do. From the London cafe that sells CBD croissants to the team here at Only Green, CBD UK cafe culture is on the rise! Here, we take a look at its growth.

CBD and Coffee – A Match Made in HeavenOnly Greed CBD Coffee Products With Mug

Cafes have always been locations in bustling cities and small towns where people meet to share ideas, work on personal projects and find solace in their busy day to day lives. Cafes in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village were the epicentre of the folk movement in the sixties. Before that, London’s cafes in the 17th and 18th centuries were where stockbrokers gathered to trade. Cafes are areas of social action, commerce and relaxation, so the introduction of CBD to the menu fits naturally!

CBD drinks, like coffee and tea, as well as edibles, are a great way to relax and take the edge off after a long day at the office or with breakfast. Some think that they may provide fewer therapeutic benefits than taking CBD oil throughout the day. However, CBD drinks and food may still provide benefits for mental health conditions and as a method of stress relief. Where better to sit down and sip on a relaxing, hot mug of CBD coffee or tea than at a cafe! Now that the sun is out and COVID restrictions are lifting, there’s never been a better time to visit your local CBD cafe in the UK.

A Brief Guide To CBD Infused Drinks and Edibles In The UK

With the explosion of CBD oil, tinctures, balms and other CBD products across the market, it’s no surprise that drinks and edibles have also become increasingly popular. The internet is awash with brands selling CBD drinks, as well as edibles and cannabinoid snacks. CBD-infused drinks and edibles in the UK can be used both recreationally and therapeutically. However, using CBD oil drops is usually the best way to administer CBD as a treatment for mental health conditions. From CBD coffee and tea to cocktails, we take a look at the most popular CBD food and drinks in the UK, where you can find them and if they’re worth it.

Popular CBD Drinks In The UK

There are countless popular CBD drinks in the UK; here we take a look at just a few.

CBD Coffee and Tea

CBD coffee and tea have both become popular cannabidiol-infused drinks across the world. Luckily for you, we stock OG CBD coffee and tea in our online store and our cafe in Bristol! You can brew CBD coffee and tea at home using CBD oil drops, or you can buy CBD coffee beans directly from us to use in your french press or espresso machine. CBD cafes, just like ours in Bristol, are also popping up across the country as wellness lifestyles become more mainstream. If you’d like to find out more about CBD coffee, you can read our guide on cannabinoid coffee culture in the UK.

Cannabinoid Cocktails

CBD cocktails have become the standard-bearer for the CBD drinks industry. Cocktails are available to buy in some CBD-themed bars or pre-made and delivered to your door. Some people believe that the introduction of CBD into alcoholic drinks negates some of the negative impacts of alcohol. These include inflammation and cellular damage. Some people also believe that those who combine around 200mg of CBD with alcohol have lower levels of alcohol in their blood. Although the research on all of this is sparse, CBD drinks are, at the very least, a delicious and fun way to take CBD!

Juices & Kombucha

CBD fits naturally alongside juices, smoothies and other health drinks like Kombucha. Already making up a significant part of the health and wellness market, you can enhance healthy drinks with just a few drops of CBD for a calming, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant kick. If drinking Kombucha, juices or smoothies is already a part of your daily wellness routine, adding some cannabidiol can only improve it!

CBD Water

Water is the elixir of life; many small health issues – like gaining weight or headaches – can be reduced by drinking more water. Many brands have begun infusing sparkling and flavoured water with drops of CBD. These drinks provide relaxing, meditative and therapeutic notes with every sip. If you want to save on some money, you can always infuse – and even flavour and carbonate – water in the comfort of your own home with the right equipment and ingredients.

CBD Edibles and Snackshemp plant sprouting

Edible CBD products are also rising in popularity – here are some of our favourites.

CBD Gummies

Gummies have become a popular way of effectively taking CBD. Just like regular sweets, CBD-infused gummies are delicious, a great treat and perfect for children who need to take cannabidiol.

CBD Protein Bars

For sports enthusiasts who want to reap the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD, cannabidiol protein bars are now available. Protein bars already have excellent health benefits, but these are improved with the calming effect of CBD. For those looking to use CBD to improve workout recovery, CBD protein bars are an excellent choice.

Cakes, Brownies and Other Baked Treats

Finally, the internet is now full to the brim of excellent recipes for tasty baked treats which are infused with CBD. Simply add CBD oil to your favourite cake, brownie or flapjack recipe. Just a few drops can create a tasty snack with a dose of relaxing CBD.

Why Use CBD Drinks and Edibles?

Although it’s widely thought that administering CBD through oil droplets is the most effective way to reap the medical benefits, there are benefits to eating and drinking CBD-infused consumables. First and foremost, they taste great! Although CBD oil has a natural flavour, some may not like it. By eating and drinking cannabidiol-infused products, you can experience the benefits of CBD while eating or drinking something delicious!

wooden dice spelling out CBD

Moreover, it’s easy to make DIY CBD food or drink by simply mixing a few droplets while whipping up lunch. This means that you can take your dose throughout the day at a time that suits you and keep a tab on how much you’re taking. If you use CBD as a way to decompress and relax, then infusing it into food and drink may be one of the best ways to take it.

CBD Coffee In The UK: Where Can I Buy It, What Are The Benefits and Is It Legal?

Many people commonly use cannabidiol (CBD) as a form of anxiety management, pain relief and muscle recovery. Research into CBD indicates that it has a wide range of health benefits. These include reducing inflammation, improving skincare, aiding muscle recovery and as an effective treatment for anxiety, depression and several other mental health conditions. However, it’s also possible to take CBD more recreationally; not as a medical product but infused with food and drinks. When consuming cannabidiol-infused food or drink, like CBD coffee, you should not expect the same therapeutic efficacy as CBD oil. Instead, drink CBD coffee for a relaxing lift in the morning; something to unwind to. Here, we take a closer look at CBD coffee in the UK. What its benefits are, where to buy it and the latest legalities surrounding CBD drinks and edibles.

Our Guide to CBD Coffee In The UK

CBD food and drink has become increasingly popular in the UK. From brew-at-home CBD coffee and tea to CBD edibles and much more, new ways to take cannabidiol are always emerging. Read on to find out more about CBD coffee in the UK.

How Is Cannabinoid-infused Coffee Made?

CBD coffee is made by either infusing coffee beans before brewing, or infusing a brewed coffee with a couple of drops of full-spectrum or isolate CBD oil. The simplest way to infuse your morning coffee with a dose of CBD is to stir in a couple of droplets from your bottle of CBD oil. With this method, you can brew CBD coffee from the comfort of your own home!

Alternatively, buy a bag of pre-infused coffee beans from Only Green. We grow our beans on the volcanic slopes of Kilimanjaro. We then infuse them with high-quality CBD during the roasting process to provide you with a morning kick that relaxes you at the same time.

Where To Buy CBD Coffee In The UK

If you’re interested in trying the benefits of CBD coffee for yourself, there are several options available. Do you have a coffee grinder or brewing machine at home? You can use CBD-infused coffee beans from a novel food status-approved supplier, like Only Green,  in your machine or french press. CBD Coffee May Help with Anxiety and Mental Health Issues

There is little research on the efficacy of CBD-infused food and drink products for treating mental and physical health conditions. Especially in comparison to oils and tinctures. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in the body and can have a positive impact on mental health issues. That remains true whether CBD is ingested through an infused drink or oil. So, drinking CBD coffee can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, although CBD oil is thought to be the most effective way to administer CBD.

If you are serious about treating a mental health condition or physical ailment, you should always consult a doctor or mental health professional first. If you end up choosing a natural cannabinoid remedy, we often suggest buying from our range of oils. CBD tea, coffee, food and other drinks can help you relax. However, sticking to daily dosages is far easier using tinctures or drops.

Cannabinoid-infused Drinks Can Provide a Relaxing Lift

The main benefit of drinking CBD coffee is to provide a relaxing way to wake up in the morning. You shouldn’t necessarily view CBD coffee as a medical product. Instead, recognising it as a soothing drink that will keep you alert in the mornings as well is more realistic.

Enjoy The Benefits of Coffee Without With Additional Anxiety

If you tend to feel anxious after drinking too much coffee, switching to a CBD-infused coffee may be an effective way to help reduce any side effects from the caffeine. CBD is a naturally calming chemical compound that can reduce the effects of stress on the body and mind. With cannabidiol-infused coffee, you enjoy the awakening benefits of coffee without any of the negative side effects that can come with it!

CBD Coffee Under UK Law and Novel Food Status

CBD coffee is legal to buy in the UK from authorised vendors. From the 1st April 2021, CBD products, including CBD coffee, came under the EU and Food Standards Agency (FSA) Novel Food Status rules. These rules require suppliers to have approved Novel Food Application (NFA) forms, which go into fine detail about a product, how it is made and how it will be sold. cannabis leaf under gavel

Almost every type of CBD product falls under this new regulation, which does add some bureaucracy for suppliers and retailers, but should help to ensure the quality of CBD products being sold in the UK. As such, any supplier you buy a bag of CBD-infused beans from should already have approval. The FSA in the UK has the power to remove stock from shelves if a supplier is selling CBD products without authorisation. So, you can rest assured, with this new legislation, that the CBD coffee you buy from us is completely legal, compliant with regulation and of a high standard of quality.

Can I Use CBD Balm For Pain Relief, Arthritis and Joint Pain?

One of the most common causes of joint pain in the UK is arthritis. Arthritis causes inflammation in the joints, like the fingers, knees and wrists, and it, alongside other similar conditions that target the joints, affects more than 10 million people in the UK. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mainly affects adults over 40 years old by wearing down the cartilage of the joints. As a result, the joints inflame, which causes pain, discomfort and stiffness. By reducing the inflammation of the joints, pain is reduced and mobility is eased. Cannabidiol, when used in drops as well as CBD balm, may be able to ease joint pain and arthritis. Here, we take a look at how you can use CBD balm for pain relief.

CBD Balm For Pain Relief: What’s The Connection?

Cannabidiol (CBD) has a wide range of medical benefits, many of which are a result of the chemical compound’s reaction with the endocannabinoid system within the body. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is still actively being researched, and studies are still underway. However, many results of existing research point to its role in regulating crucial parts of bodily function. These functions include sleep, mood, appetite and pain. Researchers believe that CBD may block receptors that allow for anandamide, an endocannabinoid, to increase in the body. As a result, this may reduce the inflammation and pain associated with arthritis.Only Green CBD Balm Product

Animal testing of CBD shows that using CBD may be effective for treating osteoarthritis by reducing inflammation. It is this medical benefit of using CBD that is behind its potential for arthritis treatment.

Using CBD Balm For Pain and Arthritis

Studies in 2016 also showed that, when used in a topical rub, CBD balm can help reduce joint pain, inflammation and, therefore, help those living with arthritis. Rubbing CBD balm on an area of localised joint pain, like the knees, fingers or wrists, can help ease the pain. Early research suggests that endocannabinoid receptors are located across the body and in the skin. So, by running balm, like our Only Green Vegan CBD Balm, on an area of joint pain, the soreness and stiffness may reduce.

If you have serious pain from your arthritis, it’s always important to speak to your doctor first. However, CBD balm may be a natural alternative remedy to help reduce joint pain, improve your mobility as well as your quality of life. There are plenty of CBD success stories out there already!

What Are The Other Benefits of CBD-infused Salves and Creams?

A man celebrating a successful runsCBD balm’s anti-inflammatory properties can also help to reduce muscle pain after working out. Using CBD muscle balm may improve muscle fibre repair and, therefore, improve performance and muscle growth over time! As well as reducing muscle pain, certain CBD balms, oils, creams and salves can also improve skincare routines. Inflammation and oxidative stress both play crucial roles in skin health. CBD balm can relax the inflammation that damages the skin and is also an antioxidant that reduces free radicals from causing damage and increasing the signs of age.

What Is CBD Muscle Balm and How Does It Work?

Feeling muscle pain after exercise, particularly after weight training, is normal. It is an indication that your muscles are working hard and that your fitness is improving. Muscle pain is on-set due to microscopic damage to muscle fibres. It is particularly noticeable following a new training regime or a change in the intensity or duration of your current regime. This process of microscopic damage and the following repair of the muscle fibres is how muscles grow. By reducing the pain associated with this process, you can improve recovery time. As a result, muscle growth improves over a shorter period. CBD balm for muscles provides an opportunity for athletes and exercise enthusiasts to speed up recovery times and improve their muscle growth. Here, we take a look at what CBD muscle balm is, how it can aid and improve muscle recovery and how you can introduce it into your training regime.

What Is CBD Muscle Balm?

CBD muscle balm is a cannabidiol-infused salve. Soothing oils, creams and essential oils are also mixed to create the topical rub. After a workout, rub CBD balm on the area of localised pain or soreness for natural pain relief. For those with arthritis and joint pain, CBD balm may also be an effective natural remedy.

How Does CBD Balm Aid Muscle Recovery?Scientist working with CBD in a lab

Research suggests that cannabidiol has anti-inflammatory properties. It is this particular medical benefit that makes CBD muscle rub effective for easing soreness. Massaged into the skin, CBD muscle rub soothes the area by stimulating nerve endings. However, it also interacts with the endocannabinoid system through the skin to reduce inflammation.

Endocannabinoid receptors are found throughout the body – including the skin cells and sweat glands. As such, when you rub a topical CBD rub into an area, it works in a targeted way to treat localised pain and soreness. Rubbed into the skin, CBD muscle balm targets muscles that are inflamed due to exercise. This can reduce the inflammation and therefore, reduces the pain, soreness and helps the damaged fibres repair more quickly. Over time, your regime will improve along with the results of your exercise. Not sure which rub you might need? Read our CBD balm buyers’ guide.

Is CBD Safe?

Although research into CBD remains in relatively early stages, there are few signs of any meaningful side effects as of yet. Excessive use of CBD oil may cause signs of drowsiness or lightheadedness. However, there is, as of yet, no evidence of side effects when using it in a CBD salve or as part of your CBD skincare routine. You can even cook using CBD with our CBD-infused coconut oil!

Does Cannabidiol Balm Actually Work?

Tests on CBD as an effective muscle balm for soreness or joint pain are still ongoing. However, much of the early evidence suggests that CBD can be an effective remedy for both arthritis and muscle pain and is used by many top athletes in various sports including MMA. Of course, results may vary from person to person. But if you are looking for an alternative, natural remedy for chronic or acute pain, then CBD may be a good place to start.Only Green 300mg CBD Balm Tub

CBD Skincare: How It Can Improve Your Skin

When it comes to health and beauty, there is a constant rise and fall of fads and fashions. Everyone is searching for a quick fix to hold on to youth and expel any signs of age. There is, unfortunately, no simple answer to the question “How do I look younger?” However, we do know why our skin breaks down and can employ methods to slow it down. Research into CBD suggests that the chemical compound can fight off some of the main culprits of ageing. It’s no surprise, then, that CBD skincare has fast become one of the most popular and promising trends for skincare in years. Here, we take a closer look at CBD skincare and how CBD effectively fights inflammation and oxidative stress in the body to reduce the signs of ageing.

The Benefits of CBD Skincare

Including CBD in your skincare routine is beneficial in a few crucial ways. The aim of any good routine should be to moisturise the skin and reduce the signs of ageing through a product’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Both CBD balm and CBD skincare products can achieve all of this; here’s how.

CBD is Anti-Inflammatory

Everyone is familiar with inflammation; it’s a normal part of the body’s response to environmental stresses. Acute inflammation is the reaction that the body has when you get injured, have a cut or something similar. When you cut a finger, scrape your knee or bump your head, the pain, swelling and warmth you feel are directly related to inflammation. These are the result of white blood cells rushing to heal a wound. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is the result of stresses that are not as obvious. These may include an unhealthy diet, pollution, excessive exposure to UV and other external factors. This ‘low-grade inflammation’ causes damage to the skin and can increase the signs of ageing.Tube of Only Green CBD Lip Balm

Chronic inflammation sets off a process known as metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the skin, which degrades elastin and collagen and causes the skin to become less firm and elastic. Inflammation also attacks the fat stores in your skin through glycation. Through both of these processes, the skin becomes misshapen and speeds up the signs we would usually associate with ageing.

One of the fundamental benefits of Cannabidiol is its anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are the same properties that help ease muscle soreness after a workout. Using a CBD salve when experiencing joint pain or muscle pain works because it targets areas of inflammation. Similarly, CBD skincare, like our natural OG CBD coconut oil, fights low-grade inflammation caused by ongoing environmental factors to stop the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Our CBD lip balm can also fight inflammation in the lips. If you’re not sure which type of balm is right for you, we’ve created a CBD balm buyers’ guide for a more detailed look at CBD balms and their uses.

CBD Skincare Has Antioxidant Properties

Free radicals are unstable atoms within our body that can damage cells, cause disease and age the body. All of the atoms in our body, and everywhere else for that matter, are surrounded by a ‘shell’ of electrons that need a certain number to remain stable. Atoms with an incomplete and, therefore, unstable shell of electrons are known as free radicals. Free radicals seek out other atoms to stabilise them, reacting quickly with other substances found within the body. Unstable oxygen molecules with unpaired electrons – free radicals – seek other molecules to pair with.

A resulting impact of excessive free radicals in the body is something known as oxidative stress, which damages cells over time and can lead to diseases and the signs of ageing. Introducing an antioxidant alleviates this oxidative stress by bonding with free radicals and, therefore, neutralising them before they cause damage. Cannabidiol reduces oxidative stress. With that in mind, CBD skincare can help fight free radicals, reduce cellular damage and the signs of ageing.wooden dice spelling out CBD

CBD Balm UK Buyers’ Guide: Which Balm Is Best For Me?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is becoming steadily more popular as it becomes increasingly more commercially available. As well as the traditional CBD oil and tincture products on the market, many CBD-infused products are also becoming more widely available. From drinks like CBD-infused coffee to CBD balm, the UK market is bulging with health and wellness products that use cannabidiol as a core ingredient.

Recent medical research suggests that CBD oil has the potential to become an effective and safe treatment for mental health disorders like generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder and even post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition to evidence of its efficacy for mental health disorders, there is growing evidence that CBD can be an effective treatment for physical conditions and ailments as well. Cannabidiol may be an effective treatment for joint pain, chronic pain, muscle soreness and acne. One of the methods of administering CBD for these issues is via CBD-infused balms. But which balm is best for you? Here, we provide a CBD balm UK buyers’ guide which looks at how to use CBD balm to ease muscle soreness, relieve pain and improve skincare.

CBD Balm UK Buyers’ Guide: Muscle Salve, Pain Relief or Skincare?

Cannabidiol works via its interaction with the endocannabinoid system which is present in everyone. This complex system of neurotransmitters and cannabinoid receptors has a homeostatic function. This function helps to manage the balance of processes within the body. For example, evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in regulating functions including sleep, pain, mood and appetite.

The skin contains cannabinoid receptors and, therefore, using CBD as a topical rub on the skin can achieve many of the same results as ingesting the compound via drops. Below, we take a more detailed look at some of the individual conditions or ailments you may use CBD balm for and which products are best suited.

CBD Balm Muscle Recovery

When we workout, our muscles are damaged at a microscopic level. The fibres of the muscles tear, which causes them to inflame and then the body steps in to repair and rebuild the tissue. This is the process by which we build muscle over time when working out. It’s also the process that causes your muscles to ache after a particularly gruelling session.

A 2018 study into CBD as a pain and inflammation treatment reports that “Preclinical studies have shown that cannabinoid receptor agonists block pain in various acute and chronic pain models and that inflammation is attenuated”. As such, many exercise enthusiasts are beginning to appreciate the benefits of CBD muscle balm for workout recovery. Rubbing a cannabidiol-infused salve, like our OG Vegan CBD Balm, on your muscles after an intense workout may help to reduce inflammation and, therefore, reduce pain and improve recovery. The better your muscles can recover, the more you can workout and continue to build.

You can also use CBD oil drops to relieve pain from muscle soreness. However, the massaging action of using a rub has an additional therapeutic effect and can help to further ease any aches or pain and speed up the recovery time.

CBD Salve For Localised Pain Relief

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD when used in a balm can also help reduce the symptoms of localised pain. This is particularly true for joint pain from conditions such as arthritis.

Both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis cause pain in the joints – particularly the fingers, knees and elbows. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to accidentally attack the cells which surround the joints rather than fighting infection. This causes joints to become swollen, painful and stiff. Osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis in the UK, is a condition that sees the gradual breakdown of cartilage at the end of the bones, which usually provide a protective buffer. Again, this breakdown of material can cause swelling and severe joint pain.

Much like with muscle pain, CBD balm can be used to relieve localised joint pain due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The way that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system also makes an impact. Research suggests that the endocannabinoid system is one of the key systems in regulating pain sensation. Coupled with its efficacy for tacking inflammation, CBD balms can help to make localised joint pain more bearable.

Although CBD is not a cure or treatment for every type of localised pain, it may be able to soften the edge of arthritis joint pain to make daily tasks less painful and improve quality of life. Simply rub our CBD balm product on the area of pain as required for relief.

Balm For Skincare

CBD balm, and CBD coconut oil, is also often used as a skincare remedy. The ageing process of the skin is impacted by chronic inflammation which occurs over time. When the result of a wound, inflammation over a short time may benefit the skin. But over extended periods, it causes ageing by exhausting the skin’s defence, weakening it and degrading collagen and elastin. So, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD skincare can help to slow this process down and reduce the signs of ageing. When used as a lip balm, it can help soothe and moisturise dry lips.Tube of Only Green CBD Lip Balm

As well as being anti-inflammatory, CBD is also an anti-oxidant. Being an antioxidant, CBD can provide the spare particle that a free radical can merge with. By bonding with free radicals, they will not go on to cause DNA damage and impact the skin.

Myth-busting CBD UK Law: Is It Legal? Can I Take CBD On a Plane?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is an extract of the Cannabis Sativa plant. As a Class B drug, it’s not surprising that many people question the legalities surrounding CBD in the UK. Here, we take a look at some of the crucial legislation governing CBD. We also look at some significant changes to CBD UK law currently taking place and myth-bust some frequently asked questions.

Is CBD Legal In The UK?

Most suppliers and retailers sell CBD as a food supplement, vape product or medicine. It is legal to buy and consume CBD in the UK. Although CBD is legal to buy, the regulations governing its production and sale can be complex. In 2021, significant changes are coming into effect which is worth looking into further.Hemp plants sprouting leaves

CBD Oil Novel Food Regulations

CBD oil has gained popularity as a food supplement and natural medicine for treating conditions such as anxiety. As such, legislators in the UK and EU are trying to catch up. More regulations are falling into place to protect customers and ensure that suppliers of CBD meet certain legal standards for their production.

From the 31st of March, many CBD product categories will require an approved ‘Novel Food application’ or validated submission. This ensures that they are compliant with regulation. Driven by the EU, this legislation seeks to protect customers by erecting a regulatory framework around CBD products for safety as a ‘novel food’. A ‘novel food’ is a ‘food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans’. Therefore, as a new or ‘novel’ food product, it requires authorisation for legal distribution. The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) is following the path led by the EU in regards to CBD as a novel food. They align with the position that CBD requires novel food authorisation to be sold legally from March 31st.

The types of CBD products that fall under this regulation include:

  • Cannabinoid oils, capsules & oral sprays
  • Edibles, including gummies and mints
  • CBD infused drinks, including tea and coffee
  • CBD-infused snacks

Medicinal CBD UK Regulation

As well as the legislation regarding CBD as a ‘novel food’ item, The Medicines & Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is also considering regulating CBD as a medicine. In 2016, a spokesperson for the MHRA said: “We have come to the opinion that products containing cannabidiol (CBD) used for medical purposes are a medicine. Medicinal products must have a product licence (marketing authorisation) before they can be legally sold, supplied or advertised in the UK, unless exempt. Licensed medicinal products have to meet safety, quality and efficacy standards to protect public health.”

These categorisations around CBD – as both a ‘novel food’ and medicine – mean that regulation may become tighter. As regulatory bodies hone in on the CBD market, the number of licenses required may increase.

Other CBD Products And The Associated Regulations

Different legislative bodies regulate other CBD oil products, such as CBD skincare and CBD vapes. CBD balms and other skincare products must be assessed as per the Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) to ensure they can be legally sold in the UK. Similarly, any CBD vape products must comply with the General Products Safety Directive.

How Much THC Is In CBD Oil?

By law, CBD oil must contain only traces of THC; the psychoactive chemical in cannabis that gets you high. ‘Per pack’ of a CBD product, there should be no more than 0.2% THC. However, some labs may find it difficult to obtain accurate and consistent readings of THC levels in their products. For this reason, many suppliers choose to sell CBD isolate oils instead which contain no traceable levels of THC at all.

Can I Take CBD Oil On Holiday With Me?CBD Oil With Pipette Dropper

In most cases, you can take CBD oil on a flight with you. However, this depends on the size of the bottle you take as well as the type of CBD. All liquids must abide by the 100ml liquid rule, so you won’t be able to take CBD oil in any larger quantities. As well as this, you will have to ensure that your oil does not contain levels of THC above the 0.2% limit. Moreover, you’ll have to check the rules in your destination country to ascertain the maximum limit of THC they allow in CBD products. As a fail-safe, consider taking CBD isolate oil with you when flying to be sure. Some CBD oil companies may not adequately extract CBD from the cannabis plant, which can lead to higher concentrations of THC in their oils.

If your destination is in Asia or Africa, where regulations are often tight, you should pay close attention to the regulations in their countries. Don’t fly with CBD if you’re not sure it is legal in your destination.
